Mastering Performance Etiquette

A Guide For Beginner Students : For music students, performing is more than just playing notes on stage—it's about delivering a polished and professional experience. Whether you are gearing up for your first recital or looking to refine your stage presence, learning performance etiquette is key to success. Don't worry, though! We’ve got you covered with simple tips to help you shine.

1. Start Small and Build Confidence

Performing in front of a large audience can be nerve-wracking, especially for beginners. The best way to build confidence is to start small—perform for friends, family, or even just your music teacher. Get used to playing in front of others in a relaxed setting before taking on larger crowds. It’s like dipping your toes in the water before diving in!

2. Practice Like You’re On Stage

Before you hit the stage, try simulating a real performance during your lessons. From entering the room with confidence to bowing after you finish, practising these little details will make everything feel natural. And remember, if you hit a wrong note—keep going! The audience probably won’t notice, and even if they do, they will admire how well you recover. The ability to move on gracefully is a key part of being a great performer. And do not forget to smile—it shows the audience that you are having fun, even if things are not perfect.

3. Breathe, Relax, and Focus

Nervous? That’s totally normal! Before your performance, take a few deep breaths to calm your nerves. Breathing exercises can work wonders in helping you focus. Once you are on stage, centre your attention on the music and enjoy the moment. After all, performing is supposed to be fun!

4. Dress for Success

Whether it is a formal recital or a casual school performance, dressing appropriately shows respect for your audience and sets the tone for your performance. Plus, when you feel good about what you are wearing, it boosts your confidence.

5. Engage with Your Audience

When you step on stage, acknowledge your audience with a smile or a friendly bow. After your performance, remember to bow again to show your appreciation for their applause. It is all about connecting with the people listening to you.

6. Reflect and Grow

After your performance, take a moment to reflect. What went well? What could be improved next time? Every performance is a chance to learn and grow, so embrace it as part of your musical journey.

Mastering performance etiquette takes time, but it is not as daunting as it sounds. Start small, practice like you are performing, and, most importantly, enjoy yourself! Here in Archadenia we offer mini concerts which happen twice a year for all beginner students to perform their piece in a smaller group setting. We have also got some chances to share the students' talents around the nursing homes. Other opportunities will be performing in bigger stage such as Chatswood Street Fair as part of Emerge Festival and our annual End of Year Concert.
